Facebook – Shiny Object Syndrome!!

Having worked in organizations since the last 15+ years, I have often observed that the management often gets a new shiny software, considering its cool, integrated features and wants it to get it implemented across the organization.

While the organizational platoon is asked to feed the data into this shiny software, however, when it comes to the management, most often, they are incapable of handling that software, either because they didn’t take up the requisite training required – actually pretending to be very busy, attending countless meetings!! Lazy!! Or, the sheer arrogance, that someone would spoon feed them anyways!! Or, their short-sightedness!! Most often, all the above.

Fast forward, a couple of quarters!! While the management talks about using the software and its efficacy (while they obviously don’t use it!!); the platoon knows it heart-to-heart that its more of a letter-head exercise which needs to be performed. Few years later, the software becomes redundant, while the management keeps blaming the platoons that it was not implemented effectively, failing to realize their lacunae!!

Facebook at its inception was designed for the desktop. While people did realize that the mobile transition was happening – way too faster than anticipated. This is when, Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook declared: We’re going to be a mobile-first company.

But nothing happened the next day. Engineers came in with their desktop screenshots because that was what they were building on and were most comfortable with. While this continued for a few meetings, when Mark declared an ultimatum No more meetings, unless your mobile screenshot is first. Just by making that shift, he made the shift in the company, thereby forcing to retrain engineers.

No wonder, as of January 2020, 98% of active Facebook user accounts accessed the platform via mobile phone. The company generated more than 90% of Facebook ad revenues via mobile.

Re-training, bearing that short-term pain, being agile and ability to orient people in the same direction – all requires a lot of effort!! However, it must flow from the top!! Otherwise, you would end up having another shiny software with lots of bells and whistles, probably better than the previous one – figuratively not spiritually – of course!!
